Norfolk State University, located in Norfolk, Virginia was founded in 1935. Virginia has a populace of approximately 241,000, and is also a port city. The contiguous environment is quite urban. Students can visit a zoo, botanical gardens, the National Maritime Center, museums and several historical sites that are located near Norfolk State University.

It is regarded as a historically black university. Norfolk State University (NSU) offers four-year courses in liberal arts and its a fast growing inspiration of Science and Technology. It was previously known as Norfolk State Unit of Virginia Union University (VUU). Latter on it was renamed as Norfolk State College. Finally it was granted university status in 1979 and became The Norfolk State University.

The University has 5 academic colleges namely The School of Business, The School of Liberal Arts, The School of Education and The School of Social Work, The School of Science and Technology. Some other reputed Bachelor degrees offered by this institute are in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice, accounting, finance, clinical psychology, tourism & hospitality management, criminal justice, education, political science, engineering, visual studies, nursing, and social work. Norfolk University is one of the 9 unique universities that are a part of the NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) project. Tuition fees at Norfolk State University are very minimal which is roughly around $190 per credit hour per semester for students from its state. Students applying from out of state and students undergoing graduate degree have substantially higher tuition fees. Financial aid is also available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs.
