Maths Tutoring Revision Resources. Books Recommended by Maths Tutors to Pass Standard Grade and Higher Maths

Having the necessary learning materials is essential in passing Standard Grade and Higher Maths. The following is a recommended list of reading material for the study and revision of Standard Grade, Higher and Intermediate Maths and an explanation, and analysis of the books content.

New Maths In Action S3/3 Pupil Book and S4/3 Pupil Book - By Harvey Douglas Brown.
The credit level books in this series have been revised significantly from past editions, making them more accessible to a wider number of students at this level. This edition also has the fast track feature to allow for an early presentation. Where work does not require a calculator, this is pointed out and identified throughout all books in the series. The content correlates between each of the books allowing students to move between levels easily. The review section which introduces each chapter shows the student the level of knowledge and understanding they need to have gained in order to be able to confidently move on and deal with the problems in the following chapter. Aswell as this a recap section at the end of each chapter summarises what the student should have learned therefore allowing them a clear idea of what to revise for the exam. These sections include exercises using the skills gained throughout that chapter to assess how well the student is progressing, eventually leading to exam type questions. This makes sure the student is fully prepared for the exam.

Higher Maths (Heinemann Higher Maths) - By David Clarke
This book covers each of the main units of study in the Higher syllabus, offering exercises which range from the basic skills needed to complete the problems to exam level questions. They also provide worked examples of problems, showing how best to construct and present the answers, summaries of the learning outcomes from each section and revision tasks including past exam questions. The exercises in the book cover all areas necessary to pass the Higher exam from the basic understanding of the principles to the most involved, complicated exam questions. Throughout the book, any questions which have appeared in past Higher exams are clearly marked, making it easier for the student to assess how well they are preparing as the go along and therefore signal any areas that need attention. The newer version of the book has corrected much of the errors which appeared in older editions. Highly recommended reading for Higher maths exam preparation.

Intermediate 2 Maths Revision Notes By Ken Nisbet
This book is specially written to help Intermediate 2 students. It is made highly usable by its layout in that it is divided into three sections, to cover the three main topics examined by the course. A step by step method is used to explain new formulae and problem solving approaches in order to reiterate and encourage knowledge and understanding of the topic. This also allows students to review what they have learned previously. Each question is accompanied with worked answers and examples so students can check their progress and identify which areas need attention prior to the exam. The book also features an extensive and comprehensive index which allows quick and easy reference for each topic and sub-topic in the student revision.
