Professional baseball has finally reached such a state of boredom that even the people playing it aren?t paying attention to what?s happening. From the files of ESPN, in today?s contest between the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers Sean Rodriguez struck out when he should have walked to first base.
That?s right, the players on both teams and the umpires lost count and thought Rodriguez only had three balls instead of four. The mistake happened when home plate umpire Tim Welke asked Tigers catcher Brandon Inge what the count was. Inge and Rodriguez both agreed it was 1-2 and Welke had the scoreboard reset to reflect that. A pitch-by-pitch replay showed the error.
The frightening thing here is that the Angels are one of the best teams in baseball and on their way to the postseason. Here?s hoping they learn to count balls and strikes before then.
Does anybody remember how a lot of the umpires objected to baseball using instant replay in even a limited capacity? Of course, right now replay isn?t being used for rudimentary scorekeeping functions like, you know, counting.
It?s easy to kick baseball while it?s down but come on. Can you imagine Peyton Manning forgetting what down it is? LeBron James forgetting how many fouls he has? Tiger Woods forgetting what bank he deposited his quintillion dollars in?
