You may have heard about the OLPC netbook. It’s a small netbook with a big mission.

OLPC Netbook
The XO netbook is a potent learning tool designed and built especially for children in developing countries, living in some of the most remote environments. It?s about the size of a small textbook. It has built-in wireless and a unique screen that is readable under direct sunlight for children who go to school outdoors. It?s extremely durable, brilliantly functional, energy-efficient, and fun.
OLPC may have been the first company to manufacture a minilaptop-sized functional PC. However, the OLPC was never intended to be commercially available. OLPC stands for “one laptop per child”, and the company is a non-profit organization with the aim of providing PCs to children in the developing World nations. The only way one can purchase an OLPC netbook is to take part in their ?buy two keep one? deal. This enables the customer to purchase a netbook for a disadvantaged child somewhere in the world and in turn receive an OLPC netbook for themselves.

The OLPC foundation?short for One Laptop Per Child?was founded with the goal of developing and then sending out a low-power, low-cost but fully functional computer to as many kids in developing countries as possible. It’s a pretty great idea. But they’re now available to us first-world types as well, so you can let your kiddies in on the fun with what is actually a really cool little notebook. To help the movement, OLPC partnered with Amazon to offer the XO-1 for $399, with a second laptop being sent free through the organization to a needy kid.
