These are some great appetizers. I always serve bacon wrapped dates, but the rumaki is new to my repertoire.
I found rumaki filed in a little yellow box my mother-in-law gave me with tons of recipes from the 70’s. It was filed under a section called “Man-Pleasing Appetizers”. I kid you not. [...]

A few weeks ago one of my co-workers brought this lovely coffee cake to work, and as soon as I tasted it, I begged for the recipe. She was kind enough to make a copy of it for me…it’s handwritten on a recipe card, which makes me love it even more!
I’m going to make this [...]

In my Wednesday entry I mentioned baking cabbage and got a comment and four emails asking how I make that. It's very simple but tasty and here's how I do it.

I was talking to my friend C. on Thanksgiving day, and somehow the subject of entertaining in general came up. I said to her that I’m very much an old-fashioned hostess. As I mentioned in my last post, my mother taught me that inviting people to my house meant I had to provide all the food, and not just on Thanksgiving. The very idea of a potluck can send her into an apoplectic fit. This attitude, like many of my mother’s, stuck with me.
When I started having parties in my early 20s, I provided all the food, soft drinks, beer and wine. Guests only had to bring their own

A few notes today with bento shopping updates for San Francisco locals, a new Facebook page for Lunch in a Box, a tentative logo, and links for my latest TV appearance. Because this is probably Bug’s last year of preschool, lately I’ve been spending a lot of time touring elementary schools to help us navigate [...]

Speaking of parties, I was finally reading Julia Child’s My Life in France, and came across the following, the description of Roger Verge’s family gatherings in a tiny village, where there was nothing to do but cook and eat. I can only aspire:
Sundays were a day of real feasting chez Vergé, and all the [...]

Last year, I wrote a post singing the praises of vintage and new aprons which were worn by home cooks–our Grandmas, Moms, Aunts and which were at one time ubiquitous in the American kitchen. The apron revival I wrote about then is still going strong, and there are more and more people making new aprons [...]

It is hard to classify The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution by internationally renowned chef and owner of Chez Panisse, Alice Waters. It has a lot of recipes for nearly every ingredient under the sun: vegetables, chicken, polenta, beef, shellfish? the list goes [...]

OK, so we couldn?t decide on the best name for these ?inventions? (actually inspired by several sources including PostPunkKitchen and chaos in the kitchen), but they sure were a hit with the kids! Don?t be afraid to come up with your own combinations? these make a great after-school snack! All [...]

I feel kind of bad that I didn't like Voodoo Doughnuts as much as I believed I would. I also feel bad because part of me feels as if I insulted a vaunted Portland institution, akin to to going to Paris and saying "The Eiffel Tower? Meh, not so much."
So let me tell you of something I did like. No, not liked...loved.
Again, for new readers here at Accidental Hedonist, I have an unnatural passion for breakfast. Given the choice between having a great breakfast or having a great dinner, I'd go with breakfast every time. I enjoy finding restaurants who provide new twists and

Last night my family and I took a stroll to our local Christmas Market. And, something really caught my eye: the handmade children’s Christmas ornaments hanging from the trees!
It seems that each tree is from a different preschool. I took pictures of my favorites/the ones I felt I could easily reproduce with my [...]

My husband is an amateur cyclist, I guess. He gets on his bike and rides, rides, rides. We’re talking 30+ miles. I’m going to assume that biking 30 miles takes a lot out of a person - believe me, I wouldn’t know from experience
On one of his earlier rides, he came home and [...]

This is a post/recipe I am writing specifically for my friend who runs a great website called Natrüulich Fürth. She asked me for a pumpkin recipe with picture quite a long time ago, but after a long search, I found nothing worth sharing.
I wanted to make something easy, natural, and for the seasons of [...]

I love scones, and I always forget how easy they are to make.
I took these scones to a brunch a few days back, and everyone seemed to like them. I loved the fresh bite from the chives, and though the scones were great as-is, I’m sure they’d be even better with a smear of butter.
I [...]

Tonight's dinner was a departure from the week's menu. My day didn't go as planned (see below) but this morning I realized that was happening and threw some black eyed peas in the slow cooker. I chopped some smoked turkey sausage and turkey ham and added those, garlic, dried onion and freshly ground black pepper. I'd hoped to bake some cabbage to go with it but that didn't happen. That's okay, though. Tomorrow we'll have more peas and baked cabbage for lunch or dinner.

I've seen a couple of recipes for apple pie with cheddar cheese in the crust, intending to try it out at some point. I finally got around to it and found this recipe that used a 9X13 oval baking dish. I happen to have one and have never seen a recipe using it. Boy, was I ecstatic!
