Hey ... does anyone of you feel the economic hardship coming your way yet? Until now, I have not heard of anyone I know who had lost their job but me thinks it's the calm before the storm. So, we thought we should start looking at spending a bit lesser on dining out.
When we think about budget, no frills meal, we often head off to Happy Date. It just dawned on us that despite being there so many times, we had never gotten down to blog on them.

Voodoo Doughnuts was way too high. It is, after all, a doughnut shop, not a four-star restaurant that is home to a world-renown chef. But part of me walked away from the place a little underwhelmed.
I realize that I may have just offended a fair amount of the citizenry of Portland. Some of them may call me daft. Others may state that I just didn't get

The countdown to Christmas is on and during this time of year with all its associated baking, butter and flour are in scarce supply and I certainly intend to indulge in the baking of many sweet treats.

So, as I promised in my mega post from Sunday with 22 Thanksgiving recipes, I am posting them each individually again with more photos per recipe and more comment. And, just in time for you to plan your Christmas meal.
Today I am starting with the turkey.
To be honest, I am not a big fan of [...]

Hot Pot is one of my favorite winter meals. It's great for groups and potlucks, or great for anyone who doesn't know how to cook or just doesn't have the time. Here's what you need:

Justin and I visit Blue Dahlia a lot. As in, once or twice a week. Mostly it’s because we have tons of gift certificates there, but I’ve come to love that little cafe.
It’s such a great place to lounge in, chatting over mocha lattes or brunch or a leisurely weekday dinner. They have Firemans #4 [...]

Well, OK, really: Last night Tamara and I shot a segment for a new TV series the Estimable J.O. is currently working on, a tour around the US. Jamie attended one of our Sunday Night Dinners in Astoria…which, for once, was actually on a Sunday. Just like old times.
And despite there being a celebrity [...]

Everyone's always talking about the French Paradox. You know, the one about how the French eat all that fatty stuff, cheese, pasttries, and drink loads of wine but stay healthier than most Americans. Well, there's another paradox we should all be pondering. We should call it the Thai

Dish duty!
Just ask anyone who has cooked anything recently, and they will tell you that the kitchen is an ideal place to reinforce what our children are learning in school. Measuring, estimating, and counting reinforce math skills. Predicting, observing, and causing chemical/physical changes in food are the fodder of scientific [...]

Last week?s Top Chef threw some curveballs at the competitors. In the Quickfire Challenge, they were initially given a page number in the Top Chef The Cookbook with a recipe that they would have to put their own spin on from previous seasons. After about 15 minutes of prep work, [...]

I admit Starbucks is not the first place I will stop for a cup of coffee in the morning. However, if I am running late, a Grande House Blend, black, works well. And so was the case this morning. A bit sluggish and hesitant getting ready to deal with 1100 [...]

I have a nearly finished post, with just the recipe left to write, that I was working on last Monday, but I never got to post it, because I took Morganna to the doctor, who then sent us to the ER.
She was having severe abdominal pain, and he thought it might be appendicitis–and it [...]

For those of you desperate to see my Thanksgiving plate, here she is in all her glory. We were at a fancy buffet in Boca Raton and most parties agreed that as fancy as a Thanksgiving buffet might be, it's still not quite as good as a home-cooked meal--it just doesn't taste like Thanksgiving.
That said: I enjoyed the Brussels sprouts and the cornbread stuffing and sweet potatoes mashed with lots of butter and served in a tiny

I'm posting today's recipe for those of you who may be looking for a new appetizer to serve at their holiday parties. These little black bean cakes are pretty versatile; you can add a variety of elements to them to enhance whatever type of menu you're preparing. This version of the recipe is my favorite. A little
