In the aftermath of the 2008 election and two terms of an administration which for many did not represent conservative or classically liberal values, there has been lots of discussion on how best to revive or reforge a conservative movement. What better way to debate the issues and the future than over a pint (or several) of craft beer?

Fun was had by all. It wasn’t the greatest of nights, and people brought their own beer (we did have about 2 gallons of pumpkin ale on tap), but we brewed through it. I don’t have pictures yet, so please enjoy these pictures from last week and pretend that they were taken last night. The biggest [...]

Sunday night supper didn't happen. My gas oven malfunctioned. No one was hurt, but I am not about to risk blowing up the house just to have crisp oven-roasted rosemary potatoes. For safety reasons I've locked down the oven and restricted culinary access the stove top until the replacement appliance arrives. Initially, I felt artistically stifled, but soon realized I have plenty of options. If I'm away all day? Pull out the crockpot. In a hurry? Use the pressure cooker. In the mood to

Pumpkin Pie - Three Ways The Thanksgiving ?to do? list is often so long we might feel as if, for one day at least, we are working in a professional kitchen. For most people, the Thanksgiving centerpiece around which everything revolves is the turkey. For many people, though, the crowning glory to a bountiful [...]

I’m going to use you all as guinea pigs. I want to start posting more about the connections between food and wine. It occurred to me that I have a perfect bag of material: dinner. I don’t cook every night, but even when we get take-out, we almost always have wine or beer to drink. And since I invest a tiny amount of effort in thinking about that beverage, I thought I’d post occasional glimpses at my thought process. First, some caveats. I believe that most wine goes with most food. I’ve had a few stellar matches; I’ve had some clunkers. But for

I seem to be one of those people who carry around an odd, seemingly contradictory stance regarding traditions when it comes to food. I am a huge proponent of new products and techniques, introducing new, unique, and hopefully revolutionary takes on food. Change is the only constant in life, and to have new options available to a food fiend is what makes talking about the topic so much fun. It matters not if it means discovering

This past weekend I ended up at Toronto's Seasons Show at the International Centre as TAPS Media had a booth set up and were also running the beer section. The Dairy Farmers of Ontario had a cheese sampling area set up directly behind our booth and were running sessions every 2 hours for upwards of fifty people. I was interested to hear what the speaker thought of pairing his cheeses with different beer styles and low and behold he agreed that beer matches much better than wine.

To beer lovers around the country, Christmas Season is here. It's here because Anchor has released its Christmas Ale 'Our Special Ale'. Anchor may have been one of the craft brewers to release a Christmas Ale, and has been doing so since 1975. Every year the ingredients change slightly as does the label for the beer. Each year the label contains a graphic of a different tree. It may not be the greatest Christmas Ale, but its always worth stopping down for and celebrating the season. To celebrate it's release this season I decided to not only try this seasons ale, but last seasons
