When my kids were younger, I made practically every Halloween costume they wore. They would tell me what they wanted to dress as, and I would get out my trusty Singer and stitch away, or we would browse the racks at the local Goodwill or Waterfront mission for just the right item. This was 1997, Men in Black was huge and WK wanted to dress as agent K. JM was into genies... Aladdin, King of Thieves was still popular and what kid didn't want to have magical powers.
Now, they are both too old to dress up like this any more. JM is going to grownup parties and her costumes reflect that. I think she is transforming into Marilyn Monroe this year. WK is planning to hang out with some of his skater buds and will be channeling Harry Caray á la Will Ferrell.
We haven't decorated the house in years. We used to do it up right. Skeletons, jack-o-lanterns, candy out the wazoo. We'd fill a big aluminum tub with candy, sit out in the driveway with our neighbors (surreptitiously drinking beer ~ it's witches brew!) and telling the teens making the late night candy rounds they had to perform (we took trick or treat seriously) if they wanted any of our meager leftovers. Most of the older kids had fun with that and we got some truly American Idol and America's Got Talent worthy song and dance routines.
The past two years we haven't even given out candy. We had it ready, we simply had NO ONE come to our door.
All the kids in the neighborhood are now teens and it's not the same. Our town is a bit off too. Depending on what day of the week Halloween actually falls on, the official night residents are allowed to trick or treat could be as many as two days different. There will be NO begging of the candy on Sundays, EVER ~ Wednesdays are iffy.
This little guy is the extent of my decorations this year (yes, those are Mullet Festival beads). These uber cool Vans my costume. (For all those wondering, I do wear these in the office on days other than Halloween.)
I really miss Halloween.
