Mom's MRI was done this morning. It was an hour plus in a closed MRI for head scans. She won't talk about it much, but I get the feeling that it was pretty hard on her. I suggested that she bring a CD to listen to and she said she'd do that, but I forgot to ask if it helped at all.
Now comes the waiting. We won't know until the middle of next week if the radiation got rid of the tumors in her brain. The lung cancer tumors in her brain. It seems strange to me, but that's what it is. Cancer is defined by where it was before it spread. Mom didn't have brain cancer, she had lung cancer tumors in her brain.
Yes, I used the past tense. Until I hear otherwise, I'm going to believe they're gone. If I'm going to get any sleep at all, that's what I have to do.
I read an article today (and darned if I can find it now,) which stated that research for small cell lung cancer is not as extensive as it should be, and the reason is that it's not popular. SCLC is caused by smoking. The prevailing opinion is that you brought this on yourself, so we're going to put more research dollars toward something else which is more politically correct.
Imagine how much progress would have been made if small cell lung cancer research had the same resources as the tobacco companies' research.
