There's that instant connection between people who have diabetes, because we really know.  We know what it's like to test blood sugars, count carbs, wrangle in pump tubing, battle numbers, fear complications, and live life with this disease every single day.  We get it, physically and emotionally. And then there are the people with diabetes who you connect with, regardless of the disease bond.  When I heard Fran Carpentier take the microphone at the Women's Empowerment, Diabetes, and Development event (sponsored by Novo Nordisk, World Diabetes Foundation, the MDG3 Global Ca

Blood pressure control: as important as blood sugar control? (1376 words) Jump to Original Source

Several recently published studies remind us that high blood pressure plays an important role in causing several of the classic diabetic complications and that controlling high blood pressure may be nearly as important as controlling our blood sugar.Blood sugar and blood pressure are not unrelated. In fact, there is some evidence that suggests that high blood sugars cause high blood pressure. Many people who have cut the carbohydrates out of their diet find that their blood pressure drops--sometimes dramatically--after making this change. Some people attribute this to the fact that for an i

When someone with a chronic illness or condition is in your life, it creates lots of things. There are many questions that need answers, sometimes routines must change, and there is very often fear. An adult sibling will often ask the questions or research the condition, most of the time they are very adaptable to the change in routines or traditions and probably the biggest two fears are (1) will they lose their sibling to this and (2) will this be their journey next. Sure, there are other emotions too, like sadness, compassion, anger, it is all part of the mourning period. The thing is t

Tidbits of the Day:Have you signed the Google Doodle Petition for World Diabetes Day? If not, please click this button to see what it's all about. A Google Doodle would be an excellent way to raise awareness about the Big D, and it would be even more effective and less lame than a car ribbon magnet:The button will stay in my sidebar until we get like a zillion signatures. Please consider it. And you don't have to donate anything if you don't want to--ignore the petition website if it asks you.Speaking of making people more aware of your diabetes, are you a young person? Say anywhere

I've been absent from blogging for the past few weeks, mainly because I was feeling a bit burned out by all of it and needed a vacation from blogging. However, that doesn't mean I've tuned out, only that I chose not to write about anything. I have a few topics pending, one of which I am writing about today: the election and the topic of healthcare. If you listen to policy wonks, the topic of healthcare has fallen down on the priorities for both Presidential candidates, as the economy takes center stage. That theory suggests that any serious healthcare reform is unlikely to occur regard

I had an interesting conversation with an old friend of mine the other day. My friend's son has many severe health issues which she has attended to on an ongoing basis since the day he was born. Surgeries, infections, daily management of the most basic of physical functions. A lot of very tough, unrelenting issues, not the least of which has been having to watch her child struggle and suffer with persistent physical and emotional challenges. She does all this with remarkable grace and courage and has so for the last 16 years. Every single day. She's done so without really notic

The weekend was a good one.  I gave up my old car ("gave up" makes it sound like it was a struggle to part with ... I "tossed out" my old car) and picked up my new Honda Civic, which I love, love, love and it is such an upgrade from my fickle Jetta GLS.After nabbing the new ride, I went to Boston and attended the BlogHer Out Reach conference, along with several hundred other bloggers.  This was my first adventure at a BlogHer conference, and I definitely learned a ton.  It was an interesting experience, having "What's your blog about?" as a social

My vlog post the other day was pretty pathetic. I watch it and see a guy who got himself into this mess and that is the thing. I am not sure I would do things differently. I enjoy being busy and having stuff going on. So I will do my best to not complain about the things I choose to do. The bigger problem is when things I do not choose are added to that list of ?to do?s? really gets to me. Not leaving room for the unexpected is my curse. This weekend was busy but some really cool things went on. One was my cousin?s surprise birthday party. I also attended the last team meeting for the retreat

The roles of caregiver and carepartner, in my opinion, are the same but very different. Being the caregiver for my son I always know where I stand. No matter where he is in the process of learning to care for his own diabetes, ultimately I am the one responsible to make sure the care happens. On the other hand, being a carepartner for my husband has been a bit more tricky. Lately it is becoming more clear that my role is being forced into more of a caregiver range.I worry about Daniel all the time, I am very open about that. I also worry about my husband just as much but have been a littl

Yesterday, October 12th, would have been my mom's birthday. I say would have been because she passed away seven years ago. You see, shortly after Daniel was born my mom developed breast cancer. She had surgery, they removed her breast and everything from the middle of her chest to up under her arm, they were sure they got it all. She did really well for three years, getting clean bills of health at every visit. Then shortly after Sarah was born my mom got sick, said she felt like she had the flu. When she went to the doctor he told her the cancer was back and this time she had only ab

I kind of started unpacking our kitchen this evening. I didn't get far, but Matt made some tasty burgers on the grill. I decided then to do this food meme, which I found from this curious girl that I know...1. My mother makes the world's most amazing deviled eggs.2. How do you take your coffee/tea?Coffee--with Splenda, preferably lots of half and halfTea--with some Splenda, unless it's at a nice Japanese restaurant. Or unless it's chai, wh
