Dad: "Guess what"
Mom: "What?"
Dad: "I mailed our taxes."
Mom: "Really? Already? You did them yourself?"
Dad: "No, I meant I mailed the forums to the accountant."
Mom: "Oh, well, congratulations then *applause*" (Source: Nothing Is Sound)

When I was a little girl, and all the way up until I left for boarding school at 13, we would spend most of our summer weekends and a fair number of our summer weekdays at the lake. The lake was officially South Holston Lake, though it was never anything but “the lake” to us. It was decent sized, a couple of miles wide at its widest and about 20 miles long, and our house there was at the widest point, near the dam. The water was clear; you could see the bottom at 20 feet. The far side of the lake was park of some kind, maybe a national forest, or maybe a state park, and as such was

Emma,Thank you for letting Dada post about me on your blog. So far you have been a really great big sister. I love it especially when you hold me on the couch. But it is too bad that your arms get sore so quickly (psst...don't worry i will not tell them about the booger you wiped on the cushion). Also when you touch my head with your hands to gently i know that you are there and care for me. I have seen you get your finger poked and blood comes out. Then Momma and Dada talk about it. But they always give you hugs after they talk about it. I am not sure what that is all about yet, but i

Us Originally uploaded by Citizen Rob I've mentioned it before, but there's a line that I love from a song sung by my favorite musician, Andrew Bird, in a cover of a song by The Handsome Family. The song is called Don't Be Scared, and seems to be (at least to my ears) about a child who lives mostly in an internal world and who perceives our world differently. The line that always reminds me of Schuyler is this one:"Don't be scared. Don't believe you're all alone."I frequently think about Schuyler being alone, which is interesting only in that practically speaking, she is almo

As is typical of me, the craving demon hit me at some point last weekend, Saturday evening to be specific. I couldn't tell you what triggered it, but suddenly, I HAD to have bagels. It might have been residual craving left over from the Reuben episode a few weeks earlier. I don't know. It doesn't matter. All you need to know is that I had to make bagels. So, let's make bagels shall we?So, I hopped on over to Recipezaar, you know, where the worlds recipes are, to look for a bagel recipe. There were alot on there, so I found a basic one and, since I don't ever follow recipes, I proc

For the first time, my wife and I were allowed, through our RICA program, to receive the rite of reconciliation or confession. Growing up Protestant I was always taught that we can receive forgiveness through Christ without the benefit of a priest. That is true, one can receive absolution through Christ without another human being involved. Yet we are told in the bible that we are to confess our sins one to another. (James 5:16) The idea of confession is that the priest is the physical representative for God and through confessing to him one gains absolution when you and the priest pray to Chr

Happy Leap Year ... day! (Sounds like kind of a crap holiday.) Here are The Leap Year Six. 1. Since I last Friday Six'd, I was trying desperately to minimize stress levels. Over the last two weeks, I've been working less at night, freaking out less at work, and peppering my days with less insanity. The results? I'm breathing easier. Just acknowledging the stress made me deal with it better. And posting about it helped, too, because disclosing my desire to chill out held me accountable. I exposed myself to the internet (have fun with t

Got my quarterly checkup done last week. The A1C numbers have gone up from 6.4 to 7.2.It is a big bummer. I am not a happy camper right now. This just reinforces my resolve to get back into the exercise and diet routine that was leading to good numbers just 3 months back.Got to go and wallow in my own misery now....

This week is just crazy. In fact, my whole month is really crazy! It's the end of the month, February has a 29th day this year. My whole life I have been complaining that the month of February is just too short. Why can't it have 2 more day than just the one every four years. But then, what could I do, unless the earth rotates differently? Ha ha ha.
As always, I almost run of of time. I am always working against time. On the job. In my own personal life. I just want to be a bum this weekend. Maybe I will. But not just yet.
I wonder how you guys spend your weekends? I hope that diab

In women with type 1 diabetes, restriction of their insulin doses can increase (three-folds!) their risk of death and rates of disease complication. Of course, in comparison to those that never skipped their insulin shots.
Such were the findings of a new study led by a team from the Joslin Diabetes Center.
The study highlights the dangers of insulin restriction and concludes that mortality associated with the behavior appears to occur in the context of eating disorder symptoms often exhibited in women with diabetes - sometimes referred to as "diabulimia" in the media.

Yep, 1:30 am and I'm wide awake. He started out with the CPap on, yanked it off and is thrashing and kicking, gasping, choking for air, and I felt like I was living in an earthquake again. No, I'm not exaggerating at all. I'm in the guest bedroom and can't get back to sleep. I just want to cry.I would love to get twin beds, but he refuses. He said he is too large for a twin bed, which is sadly true.I would love to get an additional twin bed to put in our bedroom like a daybed....there is enough room. But he said it would make it too crowded in there and I have to agree that I wou

I had a patient, an elderly gentleman (80s), with known dementia and OCD, among other issues. And he fit this criteria perfectly. It was all perfectly visible in his mannerisms.
He decided to tell me a story. It started off like this:
"I'm going to tell you a story about when I was in college. I'm sure that's something you don't understand, but use your imagination. Maybe you have a friend that went to college that told you what it's like."
I thought that was so condescending. It should almost be humorous, in that I had a name tag on stating which college I was there from, an

It's a day that doesn't happen every year, so I feel like I should have something special to say to everyone.Unfortunately, I don't, really. I can't think of a meaty post that needs to be made today. My mind feels lazy. So, I encourage every one of you out there who has diabetes to do something you don't normally do. I don't mean overindulging or skipping meds/insulin. I don't mean go skydiving or swim with sharks.Simply put, I think the message that you all should follow today is this:It's Leap Day! Change your lancet before we go into daylight savings time for once, becau

Meter Codes...When I'm low you vex me.Can you someone please explain why the meter companies can't just make all their strips have ONE code? Pick a random number - I don't care - a 4 would do. And 4 is my least favorite number. Just make it so I don't have to remember to change the code. Every. Single. Time.I know, I know, there are machines that have no coding... But those machines aren't covered by my insurance company. So that sucks. How about just picking 4? And making it the number? Can someone do that please? Me and my 32 mg/dl would be forever grateful.
