The past two nights I have been going low during my work outs. I don’t even have my basals on. I put it at a temp basal of 0% and all of a sudden during working out, the spots come to my eyes and then the shakes. Ughh! Good thing I can still feel lows or else I would be on the ground.
Actually, I found out from my trainer (yes, I see a trainer, wedding coming!) that someone passed out from a low blood sugar last week. Great! I definatly don’t want to be next!
Well, whatever.
Sometimes living with diabetes can really be a pain in the damn ass. And other times, it doesn’t

I believe that the American people have forgotten that they can truly create change. I wondered recently, quite publically, why no one seems to have heard of HR 676, which I discussed in my most recent post. I have also wondered, more privately, what would happen if people DID know about HR 676, and as a result of that knowledge, began calling and writing their representatives voicing their support? I?ve wondered about the many families I?ve met that are literally crippled by the current health care situation in the United States, and more concisely, their lack of appropriate and affordable

I would like to thank my secret(well, not anymore) sussy giver..she did great at picking out just what I wanted. Seriously, it's like she could read my mind. Even though it was cold/rainy when it came, it made the day a bit sunnier.First out of the box: with this:Thank you, thank you, thank you. I need some de-stressing therapy, I can't wait to try it out at my next endo appt.,sometimes I desperately need to whap something.(or someone, unfortunately thats just not an option no matter how much of a jerk they're being) And just in time, for those insanely cold winter nig

This week, I wanted to write more about continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), but I think I'm going to veer off the CGM path. After all, when I started this blog, I imagined it following my week-by-week living with Type 1 diabetes, and for the most part I've adhered to my initial intent. Therefore, because during the past week I've done more diabetes-related corresponding than CGM-thinking, I'll move in that direction.... (Source: Diabetes Self-Management)

Perusing my bloglines this morning I came across this post by Major Bedhead.
there's no way I could pass up a nerd test. Let's just say I didn't fail.

So that interview I mentioned I might have the other day? I had it this morning. It wasn't terrible, but it really doesn't feel like the right job for me. There were some aspects of it that I enjoyed, but not enough good parts to make the job sound like a good decision. I found that to be a little disappointing, until...my cell phone rings on the way home from the interview. It's a lady responding to the resume I sent regarding her ad on Craigslist. She sounds very impressed and wants me to come in to interview as soon as possible. I make an appointment for tomorrow (Friday) at 1p

I saw my endo today and I was given a sample SymlinPen 60. I've blogged previously about my experiences with Symlin. So in this post I'll just talk about the pen itself. When I got home I snapped some pictures before using it.As you can see the pen itself is a little longer and thicker than a large ballpoint. It's an awkward fit in my shirt pocket, only about a half-inch of the clip is actually holding it in place. I'll definitely keep it in my diabetes kit.I had planned to use the pen at lunchtime. When I opened the box and took the cap off I found...no pen needle in place. That's ri

I was told today that if you do a google search for the words:
(Relevant diabetes topics Kelly Close) the first thing that pops up is
the ADA Expo! My husband Johnny asked if I found this out by googling
myself and I said I seriously avoided that because I found a couple of
years back there is a porn star (apparently quite successful given the
number of links) called Kelly Close!
So I thought I?d put in a plug for an amazing panel I will be
moderating at the ADA Expo in Santa Clara, Ca on February 2nd 2008. I?m
really looking forward to it and the organizers have put together a

It's cold. And by "cold" I mean biting cold. The kind that makes your skin hurt when it's exposed. My day started with a pleasant surprise... A two hour late start for school. That's how cold it was this morning in the Twin Cities. Late start really means that school districts are waiting to see if it will warm up a little so that little children can safely stand at their respective bus stops. If it doesn't, then school is cancelled. If it does, then the day commences- albeit two hours later. It warmed up. Or at least, the sun was shining. This was the temperature in my car when I pulled

Ever since the publication of the long-delayed results of the Zetia/Vytorin trial a few weeks ago, the study which raised serious questions about whether lowering LDL does anything to prevent heart attack death, the media have been full of M.D.s pontificating on the importance of lowering LDL and the wonderfulness of statin drugs.I've heard them on NPR. I've seen them on my local TV news channel. Clearly the drug industry spinmeisters have been hard at work sending out press releases. On the local news channel tonight, a doctor insisted that you could lower cholesterol by not eating fat an

In the never ending world of insurance crap we get to deal with, I just finally received my order for pump supplies. I placed this order on the 5th of January and it was on my porch when I got home last night.Minimed has always been really good at helping me out whenever I call but my insurance is so flipping annoying. I am thankful I have it. I am happy I have some coverage and all that but it is just annoying. When you have working in customer service and you pride yourself at taking care of your customers since they are the reason you get a paycheck, it is hard to swallow when you are not tr

One of the questions I'm asked most frequently by people who email me is "Aren't there any natural treatments I can use to normalize my diabetes?"By "natural" people mean the herbs and supplements that are sold with the marketing message that the substances they contain are safer and more effective than pharmaceutical drugs. The short answer is NO. Very few supplements sold to help people with diabetes do anything at all but help you lose weight in your wallet. Many of them are just vitamin and mineral blends. You can read in more depth how flimsy is the data suggesting that any minerals re

(The title of this post was originally "Being the parent of a diabetic child" but I changed it. I don't like the word diabetic. Anyone else feel this way? I feel like if I call Riley diabetic then I'm defining him by a disease. Anyway, I digress.)late night and early morning fingers stickssaying "I'm sorry" as you plunge a needle into your child's fleshfear of letting them out of your site to play with friends what if they go low? hoping and praying for a curefeeling like you always have to be strong but never feeling strong enoughholding back tears as you see them spill over from your

I received an email from Jens Christianson this morning about his new social networking space for diabetics called DiabetesFriends.net. I joined up this morning and the whole space has a pretty cool look - very "Facebook" in presentation with the blue and white theme going on and similar Wall and Groups features.Jens says, "I was diagnosed a T2 diabetic in 2007. It was quite a surprise and very frustrating, as I knew extremely little about diabetes. I had many unanswered questions and used the internet a lot to find more information about diabetes." There aren~~

I am technically still on vacation...BUT this news caught my attention and couldn't help but mention it here.
According to the said news, girls with big breasts are more prone to diabetes.
The decade-long study to find the link between big breasts and diabetes development among nurses in the US shows that those with bigger breasts at the age of 20 are at a higher risk of developing the disease in later years.
Joel Ray, professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and a clinician-scientist at the local St Michael's Hospital, said this was "the broad conclusion" of his researc

I designed an information pamphlet about type 1 diabetes. I’ve uploaded it here, and would love suggestions… this is very beta.
If you have a use for it, please download the file, print it out, fold them up, and hand them out! I’m not copyrighting this so anyone may use and reproduce it.

So, guess what the FedEx guy brought today?I guess this is really happening. Either that, or someone went to a lot of trouble to tool me, printing up one copy of a book.Nineteen days...(By the way, I also wrote an article called "My Name is Schuyler" for the February issue of "Communication Without Limit", the monthly newsletter for the Prentke Romich Company, makers of the Big Box of Words.) We don't hear about this stuff on the news. Why not? Do they not want us to know? Fortunately, with the help of a wonderful listserve from the MNUHCC (Minnesota Universal Health Care Coalition), I have heard about this. This is a real bill in our very real Congress. Now would be a good time to call your Representative to tell them just exactly how much you support this bill. Even better, after you call, write them a letter. After you finish all that, go back here and read everything there is to read about this bill. While you are at it, use the power of google, and search HR 676 and see w

A FFL goodie, stuck on my cellphone:I was quite possibly the only one (over the age of 6) who had fun, doing this. It was a focus group sponsored by Abbott(Theme:How do you feel about your meter?) and you had to cut/paste stuff from magazines. I choose food, because thats the simplest concept I could find. Without meters...we would be stuck back in the 20th century, testing our urine + on a very strict diet. No wedding cakes, cookies, baked hams, pies, cobblers and a thousand other very wonderful goodies.I also put 15 items on the page(which was a stretch, it got pretty cramped!)and in the crun

I think I can relate better to the demands of diabetes self-management now. I've been having a hard time with my multiple sclerosis (MS) recently. I've started going to a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic. They do acupressure, herbs, exercises, and other methods that Western medicine doesn't believe in. It seems to be helping.... Anyone recall this post?
The one in which I share the news that (according to Joseph's orthodontist) my son will likely need major corrective surgery on his jaw at around age twenty.
Well.
After having detailed records taken -- x-rays, photos, molds of his teeth -- and meeting with two orthodontists, we discovered there's a good chance Joseph will not need surgery down the road.
(Thank. God.) (Source: A Shot in the Dark)
