Being a nurse, I can’t tell you how many times I have heard the words, “I know I can’t breastfeed after I have the baby, I’m a diabetic”. And I can’t count how many times I have said, “the heck you can’t”. There are proven benefits to both the baby and the diabetic mommy who breastfeed.
What are they you ask? Let me give you a few…
1. Babies that are breastfed have a reduced risk for developing diabetes later on in life.
2. Prolonging the introduction of cow’s milk in genetically at risk babies may also give them a “leg

My bloodsugars have been good, ranging from 90-106 this week. I can’t complain considering my food choices really stunk! I guess when it comes down to it they could have been worse but they were not my norm- that is for sure. And even though my bloodsugars were ok I did not feel healthy, you know? I guess it is in my head…
I also gained 2 pounds back over the last week, no surprise there! I will get back on track this week and will be successful. That is my mantra for the week.
Exercise wise I have been doing really good. I have been walking, jogging here and there, playing lacross

As you all know by now, information about two major studies hit the press in the past few weeks. One, ACCORD, appeared to find that lowering the average A1c of a group of participants to 6.4% slightly increased the cardiovascular death rate. The other study which lasted longer and enrolled twice as many people found that lowering the average A1c of study subjects to 6.4% resulted in no additional deaths. There's been a lot of speculation about why these two studies came up with different results.I did a bit of hunting to see if I could find out more about the details of these studies, and the

Does you kid beg endlessly for a bath? Minute after minute, day after day. Mine does.
"I take a bath now, Mommy? I want to take a bath, NOW."
Its become a mantra. An annoying constant mantra by A and I'm losing.my.mind.
If she's not asking for a bath she's begging for waffles. The kid that wouldn't eat a damn thing for the first 2.5 years of her life can now pack away 6 or 7 waffles a day (Source: My Slice of Life)

of a diabetic who is much worse than my husband. He is currently in the hospital with a heart that operates at 20%....after getting a pacemaker installed. The doctors told her they don't know what's wrong. And I just wanted to scream...but I didn't! :o) I am sure his nerve endings are shot. He's been in a wheelchair for years. He, too, eats potato chips by the bag and anything else he wants. And I wonder....no, I know, this is where I am headed. In the past 2 weeks, I have buried myself in a project for charity. A young 15 year old girl that I know is going to be doing a walk and

I've been tagged by Jen at'Use Real Butter' and can I just say what a THRILL it gave me? I LOVE her blog and have mentioned it several times on this one, usually for sending me into fits of cravings after having seen something she has made. She is amazing and is worthy of your reading! So, needless to say, being tagged by her felt a little like getting asked to sit with the popular kids at lunch. Here are the rules:1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.2. Share 5 facts about yourself.3. Tag 5 people at the end of your post and list their names (linking to them).4. Let them know they

There’s an article in this quarter’s UUWorld about everyday ceremonies… the practice of celebrating and acknowledging those small things that are the joys of life, that so often get pushed aside by meetings and duties and schedules and errands. The article included a prayer which I thought particularly lovely.
Prayer
Edward C. Lynn
We breathe in faith

We breathe in gratitude
and exhale indifference
We breathe in beauty
and exhale insensitivity
We breathe in joy
and exhale sadness
We breathe in kindness
and exhale harshness
We breathe in forgiveness

I am happy to say that I successfully beat the big storm this morning on my ride around the Alpine Dam Loop. Starting from home, I rode north across the Golden Gate Bridge, through Sausalito and eventually to Fairfax. That is where the first big climb begins, lasting about 4-5 miles. There is a rolling descent down to the Alpine Dam, and then a steady and steep climb through the redwoods up to Ridgecrest. There, you think the climbing is over but the fun is just beginning as you climb all of the 7 Sisters (which are sometimes given less polite names). Finally at the top, I endured a freez

Yep, that's People Magazine. Obviously, this was very cool.American Public Media's Weekend America has posted their story about Schuyler, which you can also listen to on the page or via a podcast. (I tried embedding it here, but apparently I am not so bright.)Speaking of being not so bright, apparently I fooled at least one person. I appeared on Think last night, and in a followup to D Magazine's Frontburner, the host, Krys Boyd, said, "He's great. Funny and candid and very, very sharp."Which was also very, very cool. Usually I'm sharp like a Weeble, so it's nice to know I can

My iPod gave up the ghost. It was young, around 18 months old. The Apple Store genius thinks the hard drive is dead. It will be around $130 to replace the hard drive. So here's where I need advice. Do I have them replace the hard drive? Do I buy a new iPod? Some of my games I bought on iTunes won't work if I do this. Should I go with a different brand? I expected my $250 product to last WAY longer than this. I'm hoping this is an anomaly. Do other people have better luck? (Source: Nothing Is Sound)

Yes, I am getting ready for the cruise. I've gotten everything together in advance that I can. Student schedules are made out until the end of the week next week, all of their grades are in the gradebook except those from today, software is downloaded in preparation....
i've got my check in bag packed. That was hard, I wanted to take a smaller case, but I just can't. In fact, I had to unzip the expansion part of the bag and make it bigger.

Two minature grizzled old prospectors sit on the corner of my desk at work, chewing tobacco and watching me work. "Blizzard's a-ragin' outside." "Yep, reckon 'tis." They're cats, not rodents."Clang."Makes no matter to me. So should we give her a good scare before she leaves? Rus

After several doses of Ammodium I have left the internal rain forest but am nearing the Sahara so I am downing water like mad. I did want to feel horrible all weekend and sitting here at work was awful yesterday. I ended up leaving at around 2pm. Today at work we have our monthly meeting. Being that the economy is in a not so happy state, my boss asked me to compile a CD with some happy songs. You know to cheer people up. Here is what I came up with.Walking on Sunshine ? You want to know something? I'm a really annoying person.Thing is, I don't mean to be. I'm also a very nice, compassionate, intelligent person. Yet, I can't seem to help being a Know-It-All.I don't mean to say that I actually know it all. I don't. Not even close. I just come across that way. Really, it is more that I'm a stickler for accuracy...and so if I read or hear something that isn't quite right, I have this innate need to set things straight.Of course, on occasion I've been wrong about what I thought wasn't quite right. But, generally, I tend to keep a lot of

I keep seeing and talking to people who get diagnosed with diabetes and are always looking for the magic pill that will cure it. Must be the fact that right now we are always being bombarded with messages on how science has made these huge leaps in health and there is a cure for almost anything in the world. Folks do not want to think about the disease, they want a doctor to come in and just tell them what to do.Well, there is no magic bullet. Type 2 diabetes does not have a cure as yet. Sure there are doctors espousing the benefits of various drugs. Sure there are lots of people talking abut
