Last week my husband and I went to Cozumel, Mexico for seven beautiful days. Well it actually rained six out of the seven days but it was still beautiful. I was a bit worried about traveling so far away and how to survive abroad with Diabetes but we made it through. Just look at the sunset view from our hotel balcony. Please don't allow Diabetes to keep you from venturing far from home. You can travel and live a full life. It just takes planning on your part.

First I called the airport and asked what I needed to do regarding my testing supplies and medications. I was told that as long as my prescriptions were clearly marked as prescriptions by the pharmacies and in a ziplock baggie that I could take them on the airplane with me in my purse. I had expected problems but at no time was I questioned.
I was also worried about meal times that crossed over during flight times and not being able to eat the meals on the plane that were not low carb or sugar free. I purchased a box of Atkins bars and kept a bar in my purse at all times. I only had to eat one bar the entire week and that was on the flight home.
We stayed at the Park Royal and while it is an all inclusive resort we had trouble with meal times for dinner. They had sausage and eggs for breakfast and I could always order a hamburger patty from the beach grill for lunch but dinner was not so lucky with my options. The resort had a beautiful buffet and with an option of four restaurants to choose from you would expect to have many options to satisfy my low carb needs but that was not so. After two days of being hungry in the evening my husband took to the Internet to find his hungry (grouchy) wife some dinner options.
He found the smallest Hard Rock Cafe in the world was only a five minute taxi drive from the hotel. We ate there four nights and I have to say that we had the nicest server around. She was so sweet and helpful to all of the tourists there. If you get the chance get the buffalo chicken salad. It was wonderful and very spicy. Be sure to tell them not to put corn on it though. Here are two pictures of the restaurant.

Since exercise is a key component of handling your Diabetes don't forget to exercise while on vacation. Every evening my husband and I would take walks either through town or on the beach. I did not have scales to weigh myself while there but it was amazing how many inches I lost. I could tell by the way that my clothes were hanging on me. Unfortunately, when I got home I only only lost one pound. Check out the pictures that I got while walking with my husband each night.

Even though it was a wonderful trip I was very glad to get back home to my family and hounds. I plan to add more stories and pictures of our travel during the week so keep checking back for more. I took almost 400 pictures so I have a lot to show and tell. See you tomorrow.
