I had the worst training meeting today all on Child Abuse & Neglect. Talk about mood killer. I heard the most horrific stories about children being held down and burned with cigarettes to parents drowning their children and shaking babies to death.
Now look--I don't want children but don't get me wrong, I like working with them and caring for them. I saw my nephew today briefly after the meeting. He's just around ten months old and he is the most adorable thing in the world. I looked at him and thought, "This is horrible.... How can anyone possibly hurt a child? They are innocent, they're like puppies!" It's beyond me that people can knowingly inflict harm upon a child or an animal. I even heard about a sexual abuse case where the uncle told a judge he raped his niece because he wanted to help her become a woman. She was EIGHT.
In my Sociology class we were talking about abuse last week and this girl, Genie, came up. My teacher asked me to visit the site feralchildren.com and I found this:
"Genie (not Jeanie, Geanie, Jeannie or Geannie and, in any case, not her real name) is a modern-day "wild child" who, until discovery at the age of 13, had lived in a state of severe sensory and social deprivation. Strapped to a potty-chair in her home in Temple City, Los Angeles, California, Genie wasn't taught to speak, and was denied normal human interaction."

Honestly, people are so sick. It's so sad the world we live in. I wish I could save everyone. I'm sick of reading horrible stories about Dave Pelzer and other abused children.
