It seems that Winter is well on its way - not only is it dark and cold outside, but bugs are EVERYWHERE! Even various friends with the strongest of constitutions tell me they feel they are fighting something off, have a tickle in their throat or have families with all sorts of viruses and sniffles. If like me, you have a susceptible toddler (not to mention a personal immune system weakened by pregnancy) going out in public seems like a game of Russian roulette!
There are some things you can do to help protect yourself and your family from the afflictions associated with the cold weather, so here are a few tips:
- EAT WELL - Maintaining a strong immune system requires the correct nutrition - in particular Vitamin C and Zinc can help. Green leafy veg and citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C and Zinc is found in meat, milk and in wholegrains so getting a balanced diet that includes these foods and cuts down on junk foods will help your body stand a fighting chance against the germs around you.
- SUPPLEMENT - If you are worried you are not getting enough of these essential nutrients, supplement your diet with some high quality products such as Herbalife’s Formula 1, Formula 2 , Schizandra Plus and RoseOx. Herbal Complex tablets (which help eliminate cellulite and maintain correct water balance) are also high in Vitamin C.
- KEEP ACTIVE! - Keeping active lowers risk of serious illness and helps to build your body’s defences. The weather may not naturally tempt you outdoors but as long as you wrap up well, you should find that a walk or bike ride can be very invigorating as well as great fun for the whole family. (If you’re losing weight there is an added bonus - you burn more calories when your body has to keep warm!!)
- WASH YOUR HANDS - colds are easily passed on when an infected person touches something which is then touched by someone else - once the bugs are on your hands, touching your eyes, nose or mouth is likely to infect you!!! Washing your hands regularly and making sure your children do the same is an easy way to help protect your family. (I have a personal phobia about chip & pin pads in chemist shops - I always wash my hands or use an anti-bacterial wipe after touching one!!!)
