Actually I’m not sure we had a summer this year in the U.K. but anyway - it’s definitely becoming colder, windier and wetter so winter must be coming soon.
Many of us give up exercising outdoors in winter (and I must confess that I take to the great indoors for exercise most days come November). But if you can bear to live with the initial chill of getting out your front door you will reap the many benefits of winter exercise.

Hi All,
For those of you who don't know, October is Vegetarian Awareness Month. I got my start ten years ago going meatless first as a full-fledged vegetarian and then after a year I converted to what is today known as a flexitarian diet.
A flexitarian diet is the most tolerant and forgiving form of meatless eating. There are people who call themselves flexitarians who eat only a handful of meatless meals a week and those, like me, who eat mostly meatless, with fish 2-3 times per week and once in a blue moon turkey or chicken--red meat I have not eaten in over 15 years

An American study shows that drinking milk increases the chances for women to have twin babies. A study published in the 'Journal of Reproductive Medicine' shows that compared to mothers who avoid milk, the milk consuming mothers have a 13% higher chance of a multiple birth! Vegan women were found to have a 20% less chance of having twins compared to milk-consuming women. (Mechanisms of Twinning: Effect of Diet and Heredity on the Human Twinning Rate, May 2006).

Pregnancy and giving birth are supposed to be some of the happiest times in your life, so why, when you hold your new bundle of joy in your arms, do you feel so sad? Some doctors attribute this postpartum depression to the rapidly fluctuating levels of hormones in a woman’s body following delivery, while others [...]

konnyaku before, the almost zero calorie, rubbery-jellylike food that makes me really wonder at the ingenuity of people of the past. Why would they think that an almost flavorless, almost nutrient free substance would be edible?
Well, konnyaku is not about its innate flavor - it’s all about texture. And since it realy has so little calories, it’

In our book, Strength Training for Runners, Nikki and I included the single leg squat. It is an exercise that I like to add into a runners program for several reasons:
1. It requires you to use a single leg to produce force; this translates well into running which requites this movement to be repeated 1000’s of times.
2. It [...]

I am an unfit mother.
Oh sure, other mothers might see the merit in hiding it better. But me, I work hard at it.
There are mothers who put time and effort into everything they do. Mothers for whom the perfect packed lunch is the pinnacle of parenting perfection.
They carve fruit into peeled quarters, trim sandwiches [...]

OK, I’ve been very pathetic about writing. But I have been running and running well. The legs feel fan.tast.ik. I can’t explain it.
Last weekend I had another blisteringly speedy 10K run, only a few seconds off the new PR. And then repeated that again on Tuesday, followed by intervals on Wednesday, and then an easy [...]

In the past few years, the popularity of Japanese food has exploded, with sushi leading the way. You might think that as the owner of a blog that is mainly dedicated to Japanese cooking, I’d be ecstatic about that.
I am happy, sure. It’s gratifying to gradually see the cuisine of my birthplace being recognized as something special. But on the other hand, I’m more than a bit skeptical. I wonder if, in a few years, hipster ‘foodies’ are going to turn their noses up at Japanese cuisine. “That was so naughties” they might be saying sometime in

Our World is being severly-affected by climate change brought about through a massive build-up of carbon dioxide largely through the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of trees.
The World usually balances its carbon dioxide levels through the trees which absorb this and emit oxygen however de-aforestation has severly-impeded its ability to do so. Palm-oil [...]
