Well it did at 3.20pm it did! With us all being ill over Christmas, I sort of felt cheated that we didn’t have a proper holiday, so I’ve been looking forward to this. Won’t do too much, some haircuts are needed (for all of us), possibly some school shoe buying (shudder), probably a trip to McDs (big spenders us) and a trip into London to the V&A and the dinosaurs. You know I’ve lived in London over a decade now and visited it frequently before that and I’ve never visited the V&A. I told Girl Lacer about what was in the V&A and she replied “You can look at the clothes and I can look at the history stuff”. We may also fit in Kew if the weather is ok.
We have a house guest over the holidays as well, the class goldfish. I’d completely forgotten that I’d volunteered just this morning as there was some intervening drama about Girl Lacer’s coat nearly going on holiday to Yorkshire. So I only remembered 10 minutes before pick up, at least I remembered though as it would have been a bit of a shock, the class teacher waiting for me, goldfish bowl in arms. The goldfish was rudely transported home in the pushchair, which was a bit hair raising as the water was sloshing a bit and Boy Lacer was obviously not in the pushchair at the same time and was having to walk, which on that route, at school run time, is perfectly hair raising on it’s own. About two thirds into the two street walk from school to home, Boy Lacer decided he wanted to go back in the pushchair, to which I replied with the immortal line “You can’t, there’s a goldfish in it”.

We managed to get the goldfish home safely and it’s now in it’s bowl on the dining room table. Boy Lacer showed an alarming amount of interest in the fish at first but I told him not to touch the fish (several times) and I think the message has sunk in as I heard him muttering to himself as he walked away “Don’t touch the fish. Don’t touch the fish,” which is his way of reinforcing instructions to himself sometimes, for example he gets confused if I ask him to put his yoghurt pot in the bin and the spoon in the kitchen, so as he heads towards the bin and the kitchen you can hear him repeating “Spoon in kitchen, yoghurt pot in bin,” although he’ll usually come back after he’s done the first bit of the instruction to check on the next bit, however that’s an improvement on the number of spoons that used to go in the bin! But back to the fish, it was swimming round its bowl rather frantically but it looks a bit more at home now. I quite like having a fish on the table (the ‘dining room’ table (I say ‘dining room’ as we don’t actually have a dining room) is my unofficial desk, with my laptop and some of my craft stuff, two cups, phone, wallet, an empty packet of mints, an empty cupcake wrapper, an elastic band dropped by the postman, an old Christmas card and some junk box creations from Girl Lacer. I have fantasises about my dream desk, it’d be just as messy but would actually be a desk and there would always be a plant and /or flowers, photos and maybe, just maybe a goldfish. I could see me staring at it instead of doing any work!
