Regular readers know I have an obsession with tea… it’s a very English thing. (Not just English; one of my father’s Bulgarian friends depends on him to take packets of Taylors of Harrogate special mix over on the plane, and I’ve noticed French supermarkets now stock a much expanded range of tea.)
A lot of the [...]

A lot of us had really hoped that the many threats to Borough Market had gone away - that this lovely little market would be able to flourish without always having to look over its shoulder.
Unfortunately it looks as if the market is being ruined by its past success - and by trustees who seem [...]

London Open House weekend seems to have been a great success - at least judging by the queues at some of the more popular buildings that were open.
It struck me, seeing people queueing for half an hour to get into a building some of them probably pass every day without giving it a thought, that [...]

I’ve often lamented the loss of London’s character on this blog - the homogenisation of our shopping streets, the destruction of old buildings and streetscapes.
It’s nice, for once, to be able to report a success - a wonderful building saved from the bulldozers.
News has just come through that property developer Hammerson has changed its plans [...]

The loss of jobs at City banks is now having an impact on London Underground. Tube journeys were down 6.4% in August - putting pressure on the fare income that the Tube needs to pay for planned upgrades.
Transport for London (TfL) projected an increase in fares of over 7% this year. That would need journeys [...]

How do you keep your camera safe? I take mine in a hideous black suede bag that’s seen better days - but it has the right number of pockets for SD cards, and it zips up tight. I got it for 50p at a car boot sale, and it works.
But I know I could do [...]

Coming up on the 20th is the Mayor of London’s Skyride, a chance to cycle around central London without traffic. No cars, no trucks, just bikes.
From 10am till 4pm, the whole of Victoria Embankment - and a whole route from Tower Hill in the east to Buckingham Palace in the west - will be free [...]

Brewing used to be big business in London. There was Thrale’s in Southwark - near the Hope Exchange, where this vital ingredient was traded; there was the Trumans Brewery on Brick Lane, Whitbread in Chiswell Street near the Barbican, and many others.
But London lost many of its breweries in the 1970s and 1980s when the [...]

It’s September again, with one of my favourite events in London - Open House weekend on 19-20 September.
All kinds of properties that aren’t usually open to the public will be opening their doors to you. Some need to be booked - and you may have missed your chance - but there are a lot you [...]

The British Museum is best known for its Greek and Egyptian artefacts - but it’s got some rather stunning American ones, too, as a recent visit to the galleries showed me.
This autumn, you’ll get a double dose of ancient America as the Moctezuma exhibition goes on show. (There were already a few gaps in the [...]

The British Museum is massive. There are rooms I’ve never visited, and I’ve been going to the Museum for years. There are the highlights, of course - the Elgin Marbles, the Egyptian mummies - but there are tiny galleries tucked away that you could easily miss.
I didn’t think the British Museum had very much on [...]

Antony Gormley’s mass participation artwork on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square has been going for a while now. I’ve been able to stroll past a few times, and take a look at what’s going on - and it seems to be a very mixed bag.
Some people are making artistic statements in a kind of [...]
